Statement

In my work as an undergraduate I was largely unfocused.
I worked meticulously and devotedly, but I was not guided by a throughline in my practice. My interests each semester seemed only to broaden. I managed to avoid the task of narrowing, (as art students are often encouraged to do). Even in my final semester, I was navigating the newness of working in three dimensions in my Advanced Sculpture Seminar  under the guidance of Andrew Mowbray.
Then, with each visiting artist that came to my classes I would become all-too intent on following their given footsteps– I thought, Oh yes this is what I will do. And then, the next week I would meet, or simply come across the work of another artist and completely change direction. Or, looking at my professors, I would find myself enamoured with their work / teaching practice and begin to plan some sort of path of emulation. How, then, might I find a consistency, or the semblance of a passion, in my student life? It was clear I cared to be surrounded by art and artists. I cared about beauty and meaning and work that draws the eye and the mind and holds the attention of both.  I enjoyed the act of admiration deeply; I was content, completely, in the role of a student.

It is now October of my first Fall out of school.

I have learned what it is to make work for my own pleasure, listening intently to my passing whims. Still, I seek to-admire the work of others, or their beliefs and tastes, but the urge to imitate has subsided.  I am beginning to find recurring themes and visual interests in my darkroom-prints and recent video work.
I have met new collaborators that I see as peers, equals.
There is excitement in answering only to myself.

I am grateful and glad to have this year to work.

Though, I know, instinctively, that I would like to take my practice further. I am craving an environment that will push my work to a new depth; I want to see, and come to know, how others make work, meet new mentors (now that I am seeking to learn-from and absorb, deeply, rather than imitate).  I would like to be a student again.

I am hoping to enroll in a one-year photography certificate program next Fall and then an MFA program in photography or visual media from there.
